Senior Vice President, People

As an active member of Chartwell’s Senior Operations Committee (SOC), the Senior Vice President, People contributes as the key strategic leader to drive Canada-wide agendas in the areas of human resources, labour relations, leadership and employee development and communications. 

The successful candidate’s responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Develops, plans, and directs the implementation of both long term initiatives and day to day operational issues in human resources, labour relations, leadership and employee development and communications.
  • Develops the reputation of Chartwell as an Employer of Choice in Canada 

Strategic Planning and Vision

  • Participates as a member of the SOC in strategic planning initiatives based on our five year plan.
  • Ensures the development of an effective strategic business plan for the People Department (Human Resources, Labour Relations and Payroll).
  • Participates as a member of the overall Canadian Operations team in strategic planning and provide assistance and insight to the COO as required.
  • Ensures effective communication of our strategic plans and business plans to corporate office staff and the leadership teams in our properties across Canada.
  • Puts initiatives in place to enhance the alignment between corporate goals, personal goals and employee performance management. 

Human Resources and Labour Relations

  • Provides leadership and direction to the Vice President, Human Resources and the Vice President, Labour Relations.
  • Provides leadership and strategic direction for the human resources and labour relations team.
  • Develops, plans, and directs the implementation of Canada-wide initiatives encompassing all aspects of human resources management and labour relations including compensation and benefits, occupational health and safety, performance management, recruitment and retention, recognition, succession planning, union relationships, HR information management etc.
  • Works with Operations to set collective bargaining mandates and strategies for homes/residences and works with the Labour team to meet those mandates.
  • Attends central collective bargaining strategy sessions to assist in setting sector-wide mandates.
  • Directs employee engagement initiatives, including the oversight of the administration of the annual employee engagement survey, analysing results and trends, and evaluating the tools used to obtain such information. 
  • Strategically designs an effective talent management program to ensure that Chartwell is an Employer of Choice.
  • Ensures ongoing integration of Chartwell-Quebec’s HR and LR initiatives.
  • Participates as a member or as the Chair of working groups and committees including the Employee Engagement Committee, Nursing Recruitment and Retention Task Force, Reputational Risk and Privacy Committee.
  • Fosters an ongoing environment of positive employee relations at all levels. 

Leadership and Employee Development

  • Provides leadership and direction to the Vice President, Leadership and Employee Development.
  • Provides strategic leadership for corporate education and training programs, such as Chartwell U, including the mentorship program, the General Manager and Administrator Program (GAP), Coaching Culture Training, Lunch and Learn Sessions, Train the Trainer Program, Middle Managers Training etc.
  • Provides strategic direction and leadership with respect to the annual Leadership Conference including ensuring it meets budget requirements.
  • Develops strategies that foster alignment between Chartwell’s goals and our investment in employee’s training and development.
  • Ensures that Chartwell U initiatives are evaluated on an ongoing basis and that evolving methods of training delivery are understood and considered. 

Financial Management

  • Provides input and advice as a member of the SOC on Chartwell’s overall budget with a specific emphasis on compensation, benefits and employee training and development.
  • Ensures the financial success of initiatives developed by the People Department.
  • Assists in developing and monitoring the following G&A budgets – Human Resources, Labour Relations, and Payroll.
