US Corporate Accountant

Reporting to the Senior Accounting Manager, US Properties, the incumbent will be responsible for US accounting in the Mississauga office focusing on accuracy and completeness of financial information received from the US management company.

The ideal candidates will possess:

  • 5-7 years of experience in accounting or finance roles; related experience in the seniors housing, real estate or health care sectors is an asset;
  • A post-secondary degree in accounting, finance, or business administration and professional accounting designation (CMA, CGA), or equivalent work experience;
  • Working knowledge of US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and/or International Financial Reporting Standards;
  • Experience with budgeting and forecasting;
  • Effective communication skills that include strong written, oral and presentation abilities;
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills to interact effectively and build professional relationships with individuals at all levels of the organization;
  • Demonstrated time management skills, including the ability to adhere to schedules and processes;
  • The ability to organize and prioritize work to meet defined deadlines in a fast-paced work environment;
  • Strong computer skills – ERP software, Microsoft Excel (advanced skills are a must have), Word and PowerPoint;
  • The ability to travel and to work irregular hours during peak periods. 

Practising our corporate values of R.E.S.P.E.C.T., the successful candidate’s responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following: 

  • Ensuring that monthly financial performance reporting from the U.S. management companies is accurate, complete, and consolidated monthly with Chartwell’s Canadian operations in a timely and efficient manner;
  • Ensuring that all financial reporting for the U.S. operations complies with the appropriate accounting rules and securities regulations;
  • Reviewing working papers and reconciliations from the US management companies supporting financial statement balances; summarizing and reporting on any risks, issues, or areas of concern;
  • Assisting with preparation of annual budgets and quarterly forecasts for the U.S. portfolio, including reviewing and preparing presentations and analysis;
  • Preparing and compiling working papers to meet annual audit and quarterly reviews for the US operations;
  • Developing strong working relationships with US management companies Finance team personnel, Corporate Accounting and Tax groups to ensure effective collaboration during quarter end reporting;
  • Assisting with the accounting for acquisitions and divestitures as required;
  • Assisting in research and analysis and implementation of new accounting standards as required;
  • Identifying financial and operational process improvements and implementing improvements after receiving appropriate approvals;
  • Assisting in special projects as required.
